In late 2004, the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) decided to set up the Centro de Supercomputación y Visualización de Madrid, CeSViMa. The center is currently located in the Scientific and Technological Park of Montegancedo of the UPM. CeSViMa provides tools for high performance computing and advanced interactive visualization, providing computer support to national and international research projects within four basic areas: Astronomy, Space and Earth Sciences, Biomedicine and Health Sciences, Chemistry and Materials and Physics and Engineering.
Currently, CeSViMa is integrated into the Spanish Supercomputing Network (RES), is included into the directory of Infrastructures and Laboratories Network of the Community of Madrid and is a member of the e-Ciencia Spanish Network.
Magerit, which is the name of the CeSViMa Supercomputer, has been the Spanish supercomputer that has reached the second best position in history on the TOP500 list of world's most powerful supercomputers. Moreover, in November 2007, Magerit ranked position 275 on the Green500 list of more respectful supercomputers with environment.
The current Magerit reached in June 2011 TOP500 the 1º of Spain, 44 of Europe and the 136 of the world, providing a peak performance of 103.4 TFlops and 72.03 of capable TFlops.
Magerit is a cluster consisting of 260 computer nodes, of which 245 nodes are eServer BladeCenter PS702 2S with 16 Power7 processors 3'3 GHz (26.4 GFlops) and 32 GB de RAM, and the rest are 15 nodes eServer BladeCenter HS22 with eight Intel Xeon 2'5GHz (10.2 GFlops) processors with 96 GB RAM, implying 4,160 CPUs and 9.2TB RAM. All the nodes operate independently and with the same software configuration.
In addition to initial support from the Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia (MEC), the Comunidad de Madrid and the Centro de Investigaciones Energéticas, Medioambientales y Tecnológicas (CIEMAT) and the collaboration of IBM, CeSViMa has signed several partnerships with various agencies and entities:
